Ms. Pollard's 2018-2019 5th Grade Piranhas
Get ready to devour the standards in fifth grade!
I am so excited about our 2018-2019 school year. Fifth grade is one of my favorite grades to teach. This age is always excited to learn! As for me, this will be my sixth year teaching fifth grade. I have also taught second grade and third grade. Both of my children have attended Morrisville Elementary. My youngest will be in eighth grade at Davis Drive Middle and my eldest will be in tenth grade at Green Hope High School.
Fifth grade can be a challenging period for many students. It is the end of an era, the last year of elementary school before your child takes off to middle school. At this point in your child's school career he or she should be independent which includes: keeping up with belongings, following directions, being responsible for class work and homework, and the ability to study important material. We will fine tune these skills this last year in elementary school to ensure that your child is ready for what lies ahead.
Testing in fifth grade involves quarterly benchmark assessments and of course the EOGs (End of Grade Tests). This year students will take a cumulative science EOG assessment focused on: ecosystems, weather, motion and design, and the human body. Do not worry, your child will be well prepared and I strive to make all testing stress free. However, your help will be needed! Please be prepared to study with your child at home and focus heavily on vocabulary.
The curriculum is exciting in fifth grade! This year we will begin a new english Language Arts program known as EL. We will learn to ask and answer questions, explore several genres (both fiction and nonfiction), and use a variety of strategies to make us not only be better readers, but love what we read! In writing, we will create narratives, opinion pieces, informational pieces and poetry! In math, students will become fluent problem solvers, multiply and divide fractions, and compute the area and perimeter of complex figures. In science we will participate in hands on experiments that help us better understand: ecosystems, weather, motion and design, and the human body. Field trips will be aligned with the fifth grade curriculum and announced as soon as possible!
I am thrilled that the new school year is just around the corner! This is going to be a great year at Morrisville Elementary!
See you soon!
Keeley Pollard
