Benchmark Assessments -
What is a benchmark assessment? Quarterly benchmark assessments are grade level generated assessments in reading, math, and science that are administered at the end of each quarter. The purpose of these assessments is to help teachers examine student progress on all standards taught up to a given point in the year and make a plan for remediation on any skills not mastered.
EOG -- End of Grade assessments that are given within the last 10 days of the school year. Currently fifth graders take a reading assessment, math assessment, and science assessment. See EOG TIPS for more information.
A Quick Glossary:
"Common assessments" refer to teacher-made assessments that are given to all 5th graders at approximately the same time in the quarter, and are used to remediate and/or enrich concepts as needed- often through Team Time activities.
"Benchmark Assessments" refer to grade-level made assessments that are given at the end of each quarter in reading math, and science. These assessments are primarily multiple choice, but may provide a level 4 opportunity in the form of a written response.
"Track 4B Assessment" - Assessments given on a particular standard to assess student knowledge, may or may not be given by other teachers. These assessments may not appear on the list of quarterly assessments as they may be pop quizzes or work products.
MATH: For math assessments, all of the classwork and/or homework leading up to the assessment should prepare them for it- additional studying is needed if the student is struggling with the concept or with the subject in general, or has been absent during instruction. Video resources are posted. Dates are approximate and subject to change.
READING: For reading assessments, all of the classwork and/or homework leading up to the assessment should prepare them for it, no additional studying is needed unless the student is struggling with the concept or with the subject in general, or has been absent during instruction.
WRITING: Once a quarter, the students write an "unassisted writing piece" where they proceed through the writing process without teacher guidance. Most other writing pieces are created through guided practice and are usually scored by student and teacher.
SCIENCE: Science is taught 4.5 weeks out of each quarter. Classroom activities throughout the 4.5 week science unit are assessed. There are quizzes and may be as many as three longer assessments given as well. Students are provided a study guide for assessments and a list of vocabulary words in order to prepare. These are usually glued into students' Science Notebooks. Studying outside of the classroom will be required for success.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Social Studies and Science will both be taught by Ms. Pollard. A mid-term test or quiz will be given at the end of week 2 and then a unit test is given at the end of our 4.5 weeks of Social Studies. Quizzes and other assessments may be given throughout the unit on specific topics. Students will be expected to use their notes in their Piranha Binders to help them study for assessments.
